Primary Membranous Nephropathy Research Studies
What is Primary Membranous Nephropathy (pMN)?
Primary membranous nephropathy (pMN) is a rare kidney disease where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the filtering units of the kidneys, called glomeruli. This leads to protein leaking into the urine (proteinuria). Over time, this leakage can affect kidney function.
pMN and the Kidneys
In pMN, immune deposits build up in the glomeruli, interfering with their normal filtering ability. Healthy kidneys keep proteins in the blood, but in pMN, these proteins are lost in urine. This can cause swelling, fatigue, and increase the risk of blood clots and infections. Over time, kidney function may decline, sometimes leading to kidney failure.
People with pMN may notice:
- Swelling in the legs, ankles, or around the eyes
- Foamy urine (from excess protein)
- Fatigue
- Weight gain from fluid buildup
- High blood pressure
Why Are We Studying pMN?
While current treatments, such as immunosuppressive medications, may help some people, they don’t always work for everyone and can cause side effects. Researchers are studying new therapies that may:
- Better control the immune response with fewer risks
- Reduce protein loss in urine more effectively
- Slow or prevent kidney function decline
- Provide safer and more effective treatment options
- Improve quality of life for people living with pMN
Our pMN Research Program
Our team is conducting research focused on developing new approaches for treating primary membranous nephropathy. These studies may provide access to promising treatments that are not yet widely available.
We collaborate with leading kidney specialists and research organizations to bring innovative pMN studies to our community.
What Does Participation Mean?
If you join a pMN research study, you may receive:
- Care from specialists experienced in treating pMN
- Regular monitoring of your kidney function and protein levels
- Access to study medications (when applicable)
- Close observation of your health and treatment response
- Coordination with your current healthcare providers
- Support from a dedicated research team
Could You Be Eligible?
Eligibility varies by study, but common factors we consider include:
- Your age and overall health
- Confirmation of primary (not secondary) membranous nephropathy
- Your current kidney function and urine test results
- What treatments you’ve tried in the past
- Any medications you are currently taking
Your Safety and Comfort Come First
Your safety is our top priority. All studies are reviewed by independent ethics boards, and strict medical guidelines are followed. Throughout the study, your health will be monitored closely. Participation is entirely voluntary, and you may stop at any time.
Making a Difference
By joining a pMN research study, you are not only exploring potential treatments for yourself but also helping to advance medical knowledge for others living with this rare condition. Your involvement may guide future therapies and improve outcomes worldwide.
Next Steps
Primary membranous nephropathy affects each person differently, and treatment needs vary. The best way to know if one of our current research studies is right for you is to speak with our research team.
We’ll answer your questions, explain the process, and help you decide without any pressure.
