Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) Research Studies

What is ADPKD?

Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease, or ADPKD, is a genetic condition that causes fluid-filled sacs called cysts to grow in your kidneys. These cysts can make your kidneys much larger than normal and cause them to work less well over time.

ADPKD is passed down through families. If one of your parents has ADPKD, you have a 50% chance of having it too. It’s one of the most common genetic kidney diseases, affecting about 1 in 400 to 1 in 1,000 people worldwide.

Why Are We Studying ADPKD?

Right now, there are only a few approved treatments for ADPKD, and they don’t work for everyone. Many people with ADPKD need better options to:

  • Slow down cyst growth
  • Protect kidney function for longer
  • Manage symptoms like pain and high blood pressure
  • Improve overall quality of life
  • Delay the need for dialysis or kidney transplant

Clinical research studies help us test new treatments that might better help people with ADPKD live healthier lives.

Our ADPKD Research Program

Our office is actively involved in multiple ADPKD studies. These studies are testing different types of new treatments, from medications that might slow cyst growth to therapies that help manage symptoms and complications.

We work with top researchers and pharmaceutical companies to bring the latest treatment options to our community. This means you might have access to promising new therapies that aren’t yet available to most people with ADPKD.

What Does Participation Mean?

If you join one of our ADPKD studies, you’ll receive:

  • Close monitoring by specialists who understand ADPKD
  • Regular imaging tests and lab work at no cost
  • Access to study medications (when applicable)
  • Detailed tracking of your kidney size and function
  • Management of ADPKD-related complications
  • Support from our experienced research team

Could You Be Eligible?

People with ADPKD might be eligible for our studies, but each study has different requirements. Things we typically look at include:

  • How your ADPKD was diagnosed
  • Your current kidney function levels
  • The size of your kidneys and cysts
  • Your family history of ADPKD
  • What treatments you’ve tried before
  • Your age and overall health
  • Other medical conditions you might have

Your Safety and Comfort Come First

Your safety is our top priority. We follow strict guidelines to protect everyone who takes part in our studies, all of which are reviewed by independent medical ethics boards. Throughout the study, we’ll closely monitor your health to ensure your well-being. Your involvement is entirely voluntary, and you may withdraw from the study at any point without obligation.

Making a Difference

By joining our research, you’re not just potentially helping your own condition – you’re contributing to medical knowledge that could help millions of people with ADPKD. Your participation helps us understand what works best and guides future treatment options.

Next Steps

Every person with ADPKD has a different experience with the condition, and every study has different goals. The best way to find out if one of our current ADPKD studies might be right for you is to talk with our research team.

We’ll explain each study, answer all your questions, and help you understand what participation would involve. We know that making decisions about research participation takes time, and we’re here to support you through that process.
